Surviving any disaster Food Storage

Food storage for survival

Rule number 1

If you are going to think ahead and store the items needed to secure your family do not tell anyone.

Rule number 2

It is like grade school if you do not have enough to share follow rule number one. Even friends when they have a hungry or thirsty

family will remember when you told them gee I have 6 months worth of food and supplies in my house. It will then be your choice to share or not.

Rule number 3

Buy food that you will eat! and rotate the stock most canned foods will last 3-5 years but the cans can rust in the basement.  Extend the shelf life by eating, buying new and replacing it.

These foods will store for a long time and you do not have to worry about them spoiling if you seal them in the plastic water proof 5 gallon paint cans.  These are either new or washed out and very clean.  Line them with a trash bag and a twist tie on the top to seal them.  Date your storage so you keep track of it. You can use the white surgical tape or duct tape with a marker.

50 pounds of rice

50 pounds of dried beans

50 lbs of sugar

50 lbs of flour unbleached wheat is likely to be more nutritious

Cans of tuna or cans of chicken off the bone ( packaged like tuna sold at Sam's club)

Spam or corned beef

Peanut butter (Skippy of Jiff) the oil does not separate as readily

Powdered milk both for cooking and drinking (babies, cream for coffee, and cooking)

Instant coffee or ground instant is easier and there is no waste.

hot cocoa mix water based, these do come in sugar free if you are diabetic but the sugar will give you energy.

Canned milk, Powdered milk, For baking or cereals

Baby powdered formula if there is a likely hood of children

Canned fruit and fruit juices.  These tend to spoil faster so rotate them often

At least four packages of yeast foil wrapped kept in the freezer so that you can make bread with the flour or biscuits. A book on baking from scratch is handy to have.

minimum of 20 gallons of water storage much more if you have the room.  The collapsible water storage containers will help with that and can be filled quickly if there is warning.

honey5 lbs. or more since it does not spoil and works with cooking and gives almost instant energy.  If some one is passed out with exhaustion and honey is given to them they will almost immediately revive.

Dried soup mix measured out and bagged for the number in the party per meal.  It could be a major staple for a while.

Dried fruits of almost any kind.  They can be home dried easily in a dryer or purchased in bulk food stores.

Beef Jerky packaged in waterproof containers that is part of your 3 ounces daily of protein

Canned beans and corn are both good and can store for up to  years.  It is a good idea to rotate your stock.

Canned meats. You can get canned spam, canned ham, chicken and even tuna fish will store for years and will give you the protein you need to survive.  Three ounces of protein per person per day will keep you going.

Jars of peanut butter will last several years as well some like Skippy and Jiff do not separate the oils easily but if they do just stir them up when you open them.

The breakfast bars at the supermarket are small and have enough energy and vitamins to keep you going and store well.

Oatmeal is good and can be made with just warm water over a candle or old style oil lamp with only a little water.

a gallon of vegetable oil for cooking.

You will need at least one skillet to cook with and a 3-4 quart covered pot at a minimum to prepare meals.  I would recommend the old style of coleman lantern with the white gas fuel.  This fuel can power either the lantern or the coleman type stove a two burner would be great.  The vegetable oil can also be used to lubricate the leather washer on the pump for the stove and lantern if it has been sitting long enough to dry out and not pump up the lantern or stove.

I would recommend two gallons of the coleman fuel or white gas.  That will last you through many meals and be a great source of heat in the winter.

Lots of candles.  Candles make a great decoration but in an emergency they provide light, heat, you can melt snow with them or boil small amounts of water and sterilize it.

Waterproof matches and a butane lighter like for your charcoal with the long tip.

If you do not have the room for the coleman stove you can buy cans of sterno a solid fuel in a can that will heat food and provide warmth for you as well.  It is small and easily stored in small places.

Bag of matchlight charcoal briquets for your barbeque if you have one you can cook what food remains in your freezer with it as it begins to thaw. Cooked food stays good longer.

You will need the same various cooking utensils a large knife, spatula, a couple of big spoons and a can opener are a minimum.

A few dish towels and some soap are good you will still need to wash dishes.  If water is not available sand is good, if you have a sand box, or paper or plastic dishes till you can get a source of uncontaminated water.

Personally I would think that a month of food is a minimum for you to store. The food should be rotated with your regular food so it will store longer. Cans are generally good for 3-5 years but watch for dented cans and odors when you open them.

Materials for making a solar oven or water sterilizer the fuel may run out and if it is sunny out may want to save it.  Instructions are on the solar oven page.

At least one Pot 2 quart at least for the cooker that is dark, smoked up in a fire, or spray painted black to absorb heat from the sun.  (cast iron is GREAT)

Aluminum foil for cooking, signaling and making solar ovens

Medicines for any member of the family once you have an issue it is hard to run down to the pharmacy and get more.  (most will let you get a bigger supply,  I have just said gee they must have rolled out of the car  and got a refill)

Plastic sheeting heavy grade for sealing doors, and windows that may not be working or broken

Staples and stapler as well as a roll of duct tape for sealing the plastic

Aspirin, ibuprophen etc for pain killer and some pepto bismol or equivalent.

A good first aid kit family size there will likely be bumps, bruises and scrapes if not something more serious.

Diapers and baby wipes if you have children, the baby wipes are handy anyway since you will likely not have much water to wash with.

a stack of paper plates, cups and plastic silverware as water will run out quickly if you are trying to clean up using it.

lots of toilet paper enough to last at least a month stored in a sealed bag, it does not do much good when it is wet from rains, or floods

wood cutting saw for clearing debris from storms or floods

A tool kit for repairs, shutting off gas lines, draining water lines etc to find water when you need it see the emergency water page

Small bottle of iodine both for wounds and to purify water

First aid kit for your home with medicines for you, kids and pets needs.

If want more long term storage and if you have the room for a 35-55 gallon drum with a clamped on air tight lid (which costs about $20) then place the stored grain, beans, etc in it but use dry ice as well.  Fill the barrel a third of the way then put 1/2 pound of dry ice in the barrel ( inside the plastic bag lining the barrel) then fill another 1/3 and put 1/2 pound of dry ice in then finish filling but do NOT seal the plastic bag or the drum. Mixing sacks of different grains, dried beans etc is good since you would not have to dig clear to the bottom for the rice? The dry ice will evaporate and create pressure if you do and possibly explode the drum.  Leave the lid on but loose overnight this will give the dry ice time to evaporate and displace the oxygen from the barrel. This will kill and weevils etc in the bags and will continue to kill and pests entering the barrel for as long as it is sealed. Your food is now bug proof and mostly water and mildew proof.
